97% of Webcomic Creators Fail To Build A Significant Readership For Their Website, Or Profit From It.
Discover The Winning Strategies Of The Successful 3% Right Here!

And Find Out Why 2012 is the Perfect Time to Have Your Own Webcomic!

From the desk of: Phil Hampton

Dear Comic Creator,

It’s the sad but undeniable truth.

The vast majority of webcomic sites struggle to build a regular readership of over 100 people.

These days, the choice for the discerning webcomic reader is growing rapidly, whilst our attention span online is plummeting.

And with new webcomic sites springing up every day, many think that the challenge to become one of the popular, profitable ones is getting ever more difficult.

But – nothing could be further from the truth!

Let me explain.

Firstly, there are a number of techniques that webcomic creators can use in the design and marketing of their sites to ensure that their comics stand out from the crowd and attract an army of raving fans.

Popular webcomics such as Penny Arcade and PvP are making a considerable salary for their creators, which has allowed them to quit their day jobs. And although these were launched over a decade ago when there the competition in webcomics was much lower, they are doing certain things right that other, less popular, webcomics are failing to emulate.

Now, the great news is that your webcomic doesn’t have to be a PvP clone to be successful and profitable in today’s market.  And you don’t need the same level of traffic to your site.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Identify your target readers
  • Implement effective strategies that drive them to your site and turn them into fans of your comic
  • Find out which products and services they are most likely to buy, and
  • Sell those products and services (using simple but effective strategies).

And what kind of strategies sit behind each of these four steps?

One word - Marketing!

There are hundreds of webcomics which have built a strong, loyal audience over the last few years (often a niche readership), and, although they aren’t as widely-read as the aforementioned giants of the webcomic world, those sites are making their creators tens of thousands of dollars each year.  But those guys have all got effective marketing strategies in place.

Just imagine – what would it be like if your webcomic generated multiple streams of income year on year, giving you the ability to quit your day job and work full time from home on your webcomic and projects of your choice?

Wouldn’t that be great??!!

But as I mentioned earlier, this is only possible if you utilise a number of key marketing strategies that successful webcomic sites use to help them build that all-important fan base, and make the readers eager to part with their cash.

Strategies that I would like to share with you.

But What if You Want to Work for a Comic Publisher?

If your main priority in the industry is to get hired by a publisher, then you simply MUST have a presence on the web!

With the exception of Marvel and DC, comic publishers do not have the lavish budgets required to sufficiently market their books.

No – these days they expect their creators to promote their own books.

Therefore, those creators who can clearly market their work will have a greater chance of getting a job with a publisher.

So if you can demonstrate to a comic publisher that your webcomic is getting hundreds of hits per day, you will stand out amongst your competition and have the best chance of getting hired!

Even if you want to work for Marvel or DC, they do not accept submissions from unproven creators. However, if you can generate a significant buzz around your webcomic, you become a much more attractive proposition.

So What Does This All Mean For You?

It means that, if you already have a webcomic site that is not performing as well as you would like, or you’re thinking of setting one up, you need to be a lot smarter in your approach in order to catch people’s attention, convert them into loyal readers, and ultimately get them to spend money via the website.

The tragic fact is – there are a host of webcomics out there that are entertaining and even awe-inspiring reads, but are just not getting the number of hits that they deserve. Their creators are working early mornings and late nights building the strips and content on their sites, all whilst holding down day jobs and supporting their families.

And in most cases, they give up and finally call it a day on their webcomic. All their efforts ultimately come to nothing…

What’s more, there are webcomic creators who have successfully built a large fan-base for their site, but they don’t know enough about how to monetise their webcomic effectively. These creators are sitting on a potential cash cow, just letting the money slip through their fingers day after day.

Don’t get me wrong – it’s great to create comics simply for the love of the art, and if that love shines through your work, that will help to attract readers to your site.

But – if you could make a living from the very thing you love doing, wouldn’t you?

These days, you can make $$$$$s from your webcomic without putting off potential readers.

But only if you use the right strategies.

Many comic creators have told me that they would love to spend all day working on comics. And even in this day and age, when the larger comic publishers like Marvel are cutting jobs, it’s getting easier to make a living from comic books.

And here’s news of a massive upside just around the corner that will help you achieve that -

Why the Number Of People Reading Webcomics Will Skyrocket in 2012!

Although hundreds of thousands of people regularly read webcomics, there are millions more comic readers, and non-comic readers, who currently don’t, but are ripe for conversion to the amazing world of webcomics.

Here are the top three reasons why people don’t currently read webcomics, and three massive shifts that will stoke a boom in regular webcomic readers!:

Reason 1 – They don’t know that webcomics exist.

However, every day, hundreds of people are discovering that webcomics are an excellent form of entertainment.

In February 2011, the number of monthly Google searches for the word ‘webcomic’ was 110,000. By the beginning of December 2011, that number had rocketed to 301,000 a month! And that’s just the beginning!

This is partly due to the major publishers such as Marvel and DC actively pushing their online digital comics stores, and releasing digital versions of their comics at the same time, or even before, the printed versions.

There has also been a boom in the number of websites dedicated to either hosting, listing, or talking about webcomics. These are all helping to increase the all-round awareness of webcomics.

Reason 2 – They don’t want to read comics from a screen.

The comic reader apps that the major publishers use enable a great comic-reading experience. And with the growth of phones and tablets like the iPhone, iPad and Kindle Fire with pin-sharp screens and simple user controls, plus the benefit that digital comics don’t take up physical space in the house, more and more people are switching to reading their comics on a screen every day and not turning back.

Reason 3 – They think that anything not published by one of the major comics publishers is somehow an inferior product.

For die-hard Marvel and DC fans, this isn’t an easy prejudice to overcome. But with the rise of social media (Facebook, Twitter etc.) more and more people are recommending webcomics to their friends. And research has shown that we are nine times more likely to visit a website if one of our friends has recommended it to us.

This is arguably the most important of the three shifts, as friend recommendations encourage non-comic readers to discover the wealth of webcomics.

But once someone visits your website, it’s no good for them to click away and forget your site exists. You need to do all you can to keep visitors at your site for as long as possible and turn them into regular readers and paying customers!

This is why I designed the ‘Webcomic Marketing Masterclass’ – to empower webcomic creators to make the right choices for them and their comic, and ultimately make it much easier for them to build an audience of raving fans and profit from their work.

Saturated? Shmaturated!

There are many who say that the webcomic bubble has burst. That there are thousands and thousands of webcomics already out there, saturating the market and making it nigh on impossible to get noticed.

But the problem with these predictions is that they do not consider ‘dead’ webcomic sites – those that are not being updated regularly.

The fact is, readers simply aren’t going to come back to a webcomic where they have to wait weeks on end for the next instalment.

I’ll illustrate this point.

At the time of writing, one of the largest webcomic directories, DrunkDuck.com, has links to 20,414 webcomics.

But only 329 have been updated in the last week.

What’s more, only 616 were updated in the last month!

Bearing in mind that these numbers fall significantly when filtered by genre (for example only 43 sci-fi webcomics on Drunk Duck were updated in the last month), the odds of getting your comic noticed are decidedly in your favour.

But Why Should You Care About Marketing Your Webcomic?

This program won’t teach about you the art of writing or drawing a comic strip. There are plenty of great resources out there that already do that. But by contrast there are scarce few reliable resources showing how to effectively promote and monetize a webcomic site.

As founder of TheComicAcademy.com, the number one comic book marketing site, I regularly provide groundbreaking marketing help, advice and inspiration to comic book and webcomic creators.

Marketing your website effectively will help you reach your target readers, build a relationship with them and keep them coming back to your site.

So if you don’t effectively market your webcomic, you’ll struggle to build your audience and you won’t have a hope in hell of getting known in the industry or selling any merchandise.

If you’re a webcomic creator, you’re most likely working for yourself. You haven’t a large corporation such as Marvel or DC promoting your comic for you. The responsibility for promoting your webcomic is all down to you.

And I’m about to offer you a big helping hand!
